High Plains Library District is pleased to welcome teen author Matt de la Pena, to Weld County. Students will have the opportunity to meet Matt as he shares the story behind his journey from a reluctant reader in his youth, to successful author of several critically acclaimed novels for teens. He will be at The Jesus Rodarte Center (920 A Street, Greeley) on March 8 from 4-5:30 pm, to visit with teens. He is the author of I Will Save You, We Were Here, Mexican WhiteBoy among others. Matt de la Peña's debut novel, Ball Don't Lie, was published by Delacorte in 2005. The book was made into a major motion picture (to be released in the fall of 2011). The book was named as an ALA-YALSA Best Book for Young Adults and an ALA-YALSA Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers.

Angie Zapata, a young transgender woman, was brutally murdered in Greeley in July 2008. The resulting trial claimed national attention because it was the first case in the nation to test federal hate crime legislation protecting transgender persons. Colorado’s own hate crime law had only just been amended in 2005 to include transgender status. Fully understanding the legal challenge ahead, the Weld County District Attorney’s office prosecuted the case as a bias-motivated hate crime, resulting in a successful conviction of Angie’s murderer, Alan Andrade, on April 22, 2009. The jury took just two hours to deliver their verdict.
Recently, the High Plains Library District hosted a screening of the film, Photos of Angie, on September 9th, 2011. A panel discussion followed the film screening and included the following individuals, many of whom were connected to the case and appear in the film:
